Mike Porter: What is Strategy?

On March 6, we were lucky to have Professor Michael Porter from Harvard Business School for a lecture in Gerrard Hall.  We had a great crowd made up of folks from both the minor in entrepreneurship and the business school.  Here are the Powerpoint slides for the talk.

Mike is famous for writing about strategy, which is the process of determining how to differentiate your organization.  He has mostly applied this analysis to commercial enterprises but has recently been extending it to non-profit institutions, governments and health care.

Before the lecture, Mike and I were joined by President Bowles for a talk about how his ideas can help Carolina and the UNC system.

It was a great example of our students being able to hear from a well-known authority and having that authority learn what makes Carolina special.
